Part 2E: Intro to Afterglow Access
Chris, in a short, 1:04 video:
In the video, Chris hinted at Afterglow Access and the power it has to do a faster analysis. We previously opened Afterglow Access to a sample image. Now we will start to explore the workbench that shows up when you open a file.

OPEN A SAMPLE IMAGE
Follow this list of instructions to open a SAMPLE image in Afterglow Access (This is a repeat of the instructions you followed in Section 1):
1. Use the link below to open Afterglow Access in a new window:
2. Once the new window is open, use the button to the right of the center of the page to login via Google.
- If you have had Afterglow Access opened previously, you will see the last file (image) displayed in the viewer screen. If you do not have any files (images) open in Afterglow Access (AgA), a message will appear on the left stating “There are no open files associated with this session”. You will need to open at least one – follow these instructions:
a) On the left of your screen, under the blue banner that says Afterglow Access, there are several icons. Find the file folder and open it. A new window pops up titled “Open File”. Choose the “Sample” folder from the list.
b) Once that is open, choose IDATA in the new list of folders (they are listed alphabetically).
c) Once the IDATA folder is open, scroll down the list. Choose any sample image (they are fits files) by clicking the box to its left. If you choose more than one file, it puts them all in your library and opens the last one you chose.
d) Next, click the “Open” button on the bottom right of the pop up window you are working in. This will automatically open the image on Afterglow Access with the Display Settings panel on the right side. If you already have an image there, use that. If you would like to see the image you opened from the file folder in the viewer window, simply click on its name in the library file list on the left side of your screen. Then explore the controls under the image displayed for zooming in and out, and for centering the image.
e) Go ahead and explore other sample images by opening any of the sample files desired.
JOURNAL WORK:
As you are looking at the sample images, BRIEFLY tour through the Display Settings, which opened up automatically when you opened an image. Pressing the symbol ‘/’ will allow this tool panel to fill the entire screen if that is better for your vision. Pressing esc will return all three panels to the screen. Answer these questions as you are making your brief tour.
1. Describe what you experience.
2. What do you find interesting?
3. What questions come to mind? Write at least two
4. Now try clicking on a different group of tools (far right side column). Don’t spend too long on this, it should be a QUICK TOUR. We will address all the individual tools in the next parts.
5. Again, what questions come to mind? Write several in your journal.
